Hello and welcome to today’s episode where we’re going to dive deep into one of my favourite topics which is the role of our mindset, especially as it pertains to business and money.
To be honest, I’ve been avoiding recording this episode because it is such a huge topic. To delve into it on the podcast feels like I’m only just going to be able to scrape the surface of it, or that on the flip side I may end up going quite far down the spiritual or “woo” rabbit hole, because I’ve got a lot of woo in me and this topic leads into all things manifestation, the energy and frequency of money, and our own frequency that we operate from in the world and how this affects what we attract into our lives.
It leads to quantum physics which is essentially the science of possibility and even neuroplasticity and how we can rewire our own brains for more abundance. PHEW, like I said it’s truly a rabbit hole and a massive topic that I wasn’t sure which direction to go in or if staying surface level with it was going to bring any real value to you.
Changing our mindset can require some deep work and introspection.
I sat on this idea for a while but after weeks of still feeling that tug I decided to go ahead and do it anyway, to bite off just one small chunk of it today. And real quick sidenote, I’d love to hear from you if you found this episode interesting or helpful and if you’d like to hear more episodes like this. So make sure you head over to my Instagram @zeldagreen after the episode and let me know.
I’m going to get into our money stories, limiting beliefs and our relationship with money. I’m also going to talk about how these impact our decision making and our lives, and of course, practical ways to start cultivating a more abundant financial mindset today. Are you ready?
Money stories
First of all, we all have money stories, which is the narrative we tell ourselves about money, usually unconsciously. It includes all your experiences, beliefs, and emotions related to finances.
We all unconsciously picked up messages and beliefs from our parents, caretakers, teachers, society, television shows, you name it. Unless we were lucky enough to have super financially savvy parents, for most of us these were unfortunately limiting stories like ‘money doesn’t grow on trees’ (that was my mom’s favourite), or ‘we can’t afford that’, or even throw-away, passing comments like ‘money is the root of all evil’ or ‘rich people must be greedy’.
I’m sure many of you can relate to hearing this sort of thing. There are still kids shows and movies now that depict wealthy people as the baddies which is total BS, when are we going to stop doing that? Sometimes I’ve had to explain to my now 7 year old daughter that the message that rich people are baddies, which alot of kids shows seem to portray, is not true.
Young minds, particularly during the age of 0-7 but even beyond, absorb these messages into their subconscious minds where, with continued repetition of these messages, they eventually become a neural pathway. And that’s really the beginning of our money stories and our limiting beliefs around money.
Awareness
My task for you therefore is to start paying attention to your own thoughts around money. The very first step is becoming aware. If this idea is new to you you’ll probably find that you have some limiting beliefs driving some of your behaviours.
Ask yourself these questions:
- do you tend to hold back when an opportunity comes along to invest in yourself or your business because you’re afraid of spending that money?
- do you avoid taking any kind of financial risk or often think to yourself ‘I can’t afford that?’
- do you save every single cent because you’re afraid of spending it or do you spend every single cent you earn because you’re unable to simply hold it?
- do you pay a bill and feel some kind of worry or anxiety about it?
- do you avoid looking at your finances all together or do you avoid investing for your future because you’re afraid of losing it?
These thoughts are coming from a place of scarcity and fear. Operating from scarcity and fear will only keep you stuck. When you do catch yourself, simply replace that thought. One of my personal favourites that I learned through Kathryn Zenkina from Manifestation Babe is that when she pays for something such as groceries, petrol, bills etc, she has a habit of saying to herself “there’s plenty more where that came from”. I love that one so I’ve adopted it for myself. Thank you Kathryn. Another one she says is instead of saying that something is too expensive she’ll just say “that’s premium”. It doesn’t mean it’s out of her reach like “that’s too expensive” implies. I love that one too.
When you begin catching these scarcity based thoughts and replacing them with thoughts of abundance, through the exact same mechanism of repetition you begin to wire new neural pathways in the brain. Try this on for a while and see what begins to happen in your life. There is magic in this.
Like attracts like
There is a reason behind this magic and it is simply this – like attracts like. That is essentially what the universal Law of Attraction boils down to, like attracts like! I no longer say things like ‘I can’t afford that’. Those words shall not be uttered from my mouth. Something might simply not be a financial priority for me, that’s all. I can afford it, it’s just not a financial priority right at that moment. Our word is our wand.
When we understand that our mindset holds immense power over our lives, and when we really operate from a mindset of abundance it puts the power back in our hands when things don’t go our way. In every moment we get to choose what mindset to adopt, we get to choose our thoughts about money, about everything, our thoughts are a choice.
What we think about most is what we attract more of into our lives.
Where our focus goes, energy flows. If there’s only one thing that you take away from today, it’s that our thoughts are a choice and whichever thoughts we focus on most, is what we’ll attract into our reality.
If you’re constantly thinking about not booking enough jobs, or not having enough to pay your taxes, what do you think you’ll get more of? You’ll get more of the no bookings and more of the not having enough! If you focus your thoughts and your attention on the financial outcomes that you actually want rather than what you’re afraid of happening, you’ll begin to welcome more and more of what you do want into your life.
Commit to a new empowering thought
If you want more enquiries, more bookings, more aligned clients, if you want to charge more, if you want to expand and diversify your business, if you want to be featured in Vogue, then it all begins at the level of your thoughts about those things.
Think about it. Every human creation that exists in our reality began with a single thought. At some point in time Steve Jobs would have had a thought about how great it would be to have a phone that fits in your pocket. And he focussed his attention on that thought diligently until it became reality. He fully committed to that thought.
When you look at things with a positive financial mindset, through a lens of abundance rather than fear, worry, anxiety, or scarcity, it can open doors to new opportunities. It can drive you to seek out knowledge, take calculated risks, to find ways to grow your business, to improve your financial situation. It can influence how you save, spend, and invest, ultimately shaping your financial future.
Our money mindset can shape our financial future
To recap, here are the three actionable steps to start creating a more abundant mindset today:
1. Become aware
Become aware of your current beliefs and thoughts about money. Reflect on your own money story and identify what limiting thoughts and beliefs may be holding you back. Pay attention to what’s going through your mind when you’re paying for things or when you’re speaking about money.
2. Reframe those negative beliefs when you catch them in action
Challenge and reframe them. If you catch yourself thinking or saying “I’m not good with money,” reframe it to “I can learn to manage my money like a freaking boss.” We all have that ability in us.
3. Repetition repetition repetition
Repetition is how you create new neural pathways and how you master anything my friend, including your mindset.
